Midnight

(aka Night - Night)

Current Board & Train

Began Training on - January 25th, 2025

Will be available for adoption post-training

Background

Midnight was found in the streets of Honduras and was brought over to the United States. She was fearful and aggressive when she arrived at a rescue in Tenessee. Like all of the other dogs who arrived at the rescue, she needed to be seen by a vet; unfortunately, given Midnight's history of living on the streets of Honduras, she was not so keen on being touched by strangers and attempted to bite her veterinary technician. The Rescue had a zero-tolerance policy for bites or attempts and transferred her to Virginia Beach's local animal shelter, Hope For Life Rescue. At the rescue, the Hope for Life staff were at a loss for what to do with her intense fear and her aggression. She did not have any chance of getting adopted without having a professional address her issues.

Training Progress

Midnight has opened up to our trainer Kehli and is no longer so unsafe for him to handle. She enjoys walks, running mini sprints with Kehli, and playing fetch with her lambchop squeaky ball.

We are currently working on

  • Midnights’ ability to meet new people

  • Developing Midnights’ cooperation during games of fetch further

  • Basic Obedience

  • Midnights’ ability to meet and play with dogs

We have already covered

  • Midnights’ ability to accept and cooperate with Leash Pressure

  • excitement towards being pet by Kehli

  • Fearfulness when outside or not in what midnight has deemed a “Safe Place” like a room or crate

  • The foundations for cooperative play

JImmy

Board & Train from February 15th, 2024 - March 26th, 2024

About

Jimmy was sheltered at Hope for Life Rescue as a puppy and developed intense reactivity and resource guarding, creating an unsafe space for other dogs and the Hope For Life team. Jimmy could not be introduced to new people, given his bite history, which severely limited his chances of adoption.

When we received him in February 2024, we made it our mission to ensure Jimmy understood it was never acceptable to bite. We redirected his pent-up feelings away from aggression and towards play and freedom. Once Jimmy's needs were met and he had completed his advanced off-leash training, we knew he would be perfect for an active home.

After completing training, Jimmy found his perfect match. Jimmy and his owners enjoy going on walks, hikes, and trips to the dog park.

Bones

(former name: Edlee)

Board & Train from October 10th, 2023 - November 10th, 2023.

About

Hope for Life Rescue took in bones as a young puppy. Based on her behavior and a medical evaluation, the Hope for Life team soon found her to be Deaf. Bones had issues communicating with other dogs and did not understand any obedience cues from handlers. While in the shelter, she developed intense reactivity and dog aggression, and her chances of adoption became very slim.

Once we received her in October of 2023, we knew our mission would be to give Bones the training to allow her to live a life just as fulfilling as a hearing dog. We did not want her to be restricted by her deafness. She was trained to understand physical cues, such as hand motions, touch, and e-collar stimulations, as obedience cues. Before training, Bones was very limited in her ability to experience the world and was expected always to be tethered to a leash. However, Bones completed our advanced off-leash training with flying colors.

Bones was successfully adopted just after completing training. She now enjoys playing tug and fetch with her owners, chasing laser pointer lights off leash with her dad, and getting snuggles from her mom.
